How to Overcome Injustice

 



Injustice is a term used to describe situations in which a person's rights have been violated. Usually, injustice is committed by a person in power against those who don't have as much influence. However, in some cases, injustice can also occur by an entire group of people. This type of injustice is called social injustice.

In many ways, social injustice can be difficult to understand and overcome because it takes place on a large scale. Fortunately, there are organizations that can help to address injustice. The Injustice Community of Practice (CoP), for example, brings together social enterprises led by and serving communities that experience systemic injustices to discuss how they target the root causes of those injustices. In their last meeting, co-founders Camille Lesforis and Dominic Ellison discussed how the CoP can be helpful to those attempting to tackle injustice within their communities.

When people feel they are unfairly treated, it's likely that they will seek to rectify the situation by using political or legal means. If they are unable to achieve their goals through these methods, they may turn to violence. This can lead to justice conflicts, in which the dominant and subordinate groups fight for their respective definitions of justice.

It is important to understand that injustices are often interconnected, and the effects of one form of injustice can reinforce other forms of oppression. For instance, economic inequality can lead to lack of access to quality education and healthcare, which in turn can lead to poverty and social isolation. The same can be said for racial discrimination, which can lead to disproportionate rates of criminal incarceration and limited employment opportunities.

In addition, injustice can be caused by societal norms that promote exclusionary ideas and beliefs. These ideologies can become deeply embedded in people's ways of thinking and are therefore often difficult to change. Sometimes, people who are exposed to injustices can develop what is known as injustice trauma. This can have physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral effects. It's important to know the signs of injustice trauma and to seek out support from a loved one or professional counselor.

It's also essential to remember that it's not your fault if you have experienced injustice trauma. While it's hard to accept, blaming yourself only makes the problem worse. Instead, it's better to see that the events you experienced were out of your control and that there are things you can do to help yourself heal.

Achieving true equality in the world requires a lot of work, but it is possible. It's up to us all to make sure we do what we can to help combat injustice in whatever way we can. Whether that's supporting the work of those tackling injustice in our local communities, or simply taking steps to reduce our own prejudices and stereotypes so we can open ourselves up to understanding other people's perspectives.
