The 3-Way Bus Will Be the Newest School Bus in Baldwin County

School is back in session around the county and that means more buses on the road. Drivers are reminded to stop for all school buses with their flashing lights or stop arm extended, whether it's on two-lane roads or multi-lane highways. It's the law in Georgia and it's for everyone's safety.

On a two-lane road, it's pretty simple; traffic on both sides must stop when the bus's light or arm is activated. "It's for the safety of the kids," Donald Tuft, transportation director with Baldwin County Schools says. "One baby could be crossing the road and if you don't stop, that one baby can be hit by your car."

But what happens when the school bus is on a highway? Especially with a three or five lane highway? "It's a little different, there are more cars," Tuft explains. "But the same rule applies, you must stop."

To help drivers see the bus better, a new LED lighting system on the front of the bus is being added this year. The xe day thuc an 3 tang nhua lights will also come on automatically when the bus's stop arm is lowered or pulled up. There are also more warnings on the front of the bus, and the driver will sound a horn before it's time to get on board or off again.

Another big change on the bus this year will be the first-ever electric bus. The 72-passenger vehicle looks just like a regular bus, but it's powered by wind energy. It's a collaboration between Dakota Electric, Schmitty & Sons and Great River Energy. The bus is made by Canadian-based Lion Electric and is able to withstand the harsh Minnesota winter. It's also equipped with auxiliary heating to make sure students riding on cold days can stay comfortable.

The bus will start service in the fall and connect the Lakeville area to Blacksburg and Virginia Tech. Students who live closer to campus will be able to take the Smart Way Express for free.

Passengers should be at the stop and ready to board three to five minutes before their scheduled pick-up time. When boarding, passengers should look for their destination number and name displayed above the driver's windshield. They should double-check to be sure they are boarding the correct bus and pay their fare before stepping on board.

Customers who purchase monthly passes will have unlimited rides on local bus routes for the number of zones printed on their pass during the month. Passes can be purchased at any BCT ticket vending machine, on the MyTix app or at any BCT ticket office. Customers who transfer between BCT buses and light rail will need to show their pass when boarding the second bus or light rail vehicle. All other passenger fares are valid on local and premium express buses.
